Dining by candle light is a romantic alternative when load shedding strikes in the Drakensberg Mountains

Load-shedding. It’s a reality we have to live with in the Drakensberg Mountains. But we live in a place that is South Africa’s most beautiful mountains and when we do have load shedding you don’t have to stop enjoying yourself. There is just plenty to do when Eskom flips the switch. In fact the lack of power might just create some extra special experiences. Here are some of my best Drakensberg times in the dark.

  • Walk a labyrinth by moonlight. The meditative effect is huge and the sounds of the evening are wonderful. And there is South Africa’s biggest labyrinth near to Antbear Lodge.
  • Go for a full moon hike. There are some easy to walk paths and somehow its completely different by moonlight.
  • Dine by candlelight. The atmosphere is so relaxed, romantic and intimate that you might well be disappointed when the lights come back on.  And At Antbear Lodge dining by candlelight is an every day experience.
  • Go for a picnic up the nearest hill. Sit on the top of the hill and just enjoy the scenery and the tasty snacks you have packed for lunch
