Hospitality at its best

Drakensberg accommodation - hospitality at its best

Our story begins with Andrew and Conny buying a ruin on a delapidated piece of land we now all call home. We have developed a community together and its our passion to continue with our love for hospitality. We are now a team of 14 people who are dedicated to working together to make your stay as authentic, special and memerable as we can.

“We are very  honored to be able to serve you.  We love our work at Antbear Lodge and are proud of what we have achieved together. Some of us have been here since the very beginning. We support each other and because we know that together we are better. “  says Thoko who was busy with some house keeping chores

Our Vision

Antbear Drakensberg Lodge  employs local Zulu staff from the local area. Most have no previous work experience or formal training. We provide continues training and skills development with workshops and practical training. Our vision at Antbear Drakensberg Lodge is based on responsible tourism including fair wages and working conditions, fair distribution of benefits, ethical business practice, and respect for human rights, culture and the environment. Perhaps this is why we have such a low staff turnover and also a commitment from all to make this business successful.

Andrew and Connie

Andrew used to be involved with computers and ran a small IT consultant business in Germany.  Conny  married Andrew in 1996 and was the inspiring drive to come here and start a lodge in the Drakensberg Mountains. Conny grew tired of her stressful life in Cologne has found here place creating our own little paradise. Together they have established an organic vegetable garden, learned to ride and train horses, has created masterpieces with alternative building styles and are the glue that holds the Antbear together. It had always been a dream of theirs to look after animals and live sustainably.

The team

We have concept of working together. Everyone here feels part of the team and we all contribute to our lodge in our own ways. Thoko helps out where ever it is necessary from welcoming you to our lodge to making sure the garden is not being neglected or that the raspberries are being cooked into jam. Che, Kanje and Londiwe are the stars in the kitchen. Nomusa and Bongiwe are proud to take care of your rooms. And the rest of us are busy in the background.  And we are all thrilled to host you as our guests.

The farm

Antbear Lodge is also home to horses, donkeys, a few cows, a flock of sheep, some geese, turkeys, ducks, chickens, dogs and some cats. The dogs love to walk and are always willing to show guests the place. Conny is passionate about her horses and practices the gentler horse whispering methods to train them. Infact everyone here has become passionate about this. Buasiwe has recently started to learn to spin wool, knit and weave as we slowly start our new home weaving venture.
