2015 is going to be a great year. I had this feeling in my bones and clearly the latest news that construcion of the R74 is about to recommence is a confirmation of that feeling.  The R74 has been in a state of disrepair for more than five years and has caused a huge loss of tourism to the Drakensberg Region. The R74 is the supposed to be the alternative to the N3 toll route for those travelling between the Free State and KwaZulu Natal. But right now you will do better to take the dirt road that passes over the Middledale pass via Geluksburg.

The provincial roads department says things will soon take a turn for the better and that construction will already begin by march 2015.

The Northern Drakensberg is undoubtedly one of South Africa’s most picturesque regions and it will be fantastic to at last again be able to recommend this scenic route to our guests
